Happy New Year! I hope that everyone is enjoying the time at home with their families. Please remember to be safe as you celebrate the coming of 2017. We return to school on Tuesday, January 3rd.
As we prepare to return to school I would like to provide some information for everyone. Due to the weather conditions, we have determined the best course of action will be to postpone phase 2 of the construction project until March. This means that we will need to continue to be patient as we deal with limited playground and lack of parking. I truly appreciate the great job parents and others are doing as they drop off and pick up students along 6th street, please continue to make sure to drop off and pick up only on the school side of the street. This is a great help to ensure the safety of our students.
I would also like to ask your assistance as we deal with limited playground space. As students do not have access to an outdoor playground before school we keep them in the cafeteria and gym. However, this is still limited space for all of our students. I would like to allow students to play board games or other small hand held games in the hallways. If you have games that your children no longer play with at home, we would love to have them donated to the school for this use. Students may also bring personal games to play in the hallway during this time. I would ask that you not send electronic devices or other expensive items that may be lost or broken.
A third issue that we may be facing as we come back to school in January are the predicted extremely cold temperatures. The decision is made prior to each recess whether or not students will be allowed outside for recess. I base this decision on the temperature, wind conditions, and moisture level outside, including what snow or rain may be on the ground. We are working with the Junior/Senior High school to see if we might be able to use the Junior High gym on occasion for indoor recess when the weather conditions are poor, however, many times indoor recess means that students will remain in the classrooms or in the hallways playing games or reading. Please always make sure that your student has appropriate clothing for the weather – in case of emergency and they have to go outside. If possible when there is snow or rain, sending a child in snow boots with an extra pair of shoes is a great help. If you have snow boots that your children have outgrown, and you would like to donate them to the school we would love to keep them here for students who may need a pair to wear during the day.
See you in January!
